Therapy Riding

Equine Therapy Sessions

Horses are social animals by nature and enjoy interaction with humans. They can sense things that we can not yet put into words. Horses are not judgemental; they are loving and caring by nature.

What will Equine Therapy work for?

Autism, ADD, ADHD, brain injuries, strokes, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities and muscular dystrophy to name but a few. Other advantages of Equine Therapy includes better balance and coordination, relaxation and tension release, improved circulation, muscle tone and the range of motion of joints, better cardio vascular functioning, improves hand-eye-coordination as well as fine and gross motor skills, builds self-confidence, self-awareness, patience and discipline as well as a better understanding of action and consequence.

What to expect at a session:

Sessions are planned according to the specific physical, psychological, cognitive and behavioural goals of every individual. These sessions can be either mounted or un-mounted, depending on the goal that needs to be achieved. Therapy sessions will not be strictly limited to therapy, but will also include learning of correct horsemanship (including where to stand, how to handle a horse, parts of the horse, and eventually how to ride the horse on their own.)

A horse or pony will be selected for each session with the individual in mind; this includes choosing the equine friend with the correct temperament or personality type, as well as the correct gait or movement through the back. All horses are safe, friendly, affectionate and very reliable.

Safety is paramount during these sessions. Even though an instructor will be with them at all times the riders will be requested to wear closed shoes and hard hats at all times while on or around the horses. With very young children parents will be allowed in the arena during the session.

Improvement should be visible within 3 to 4 months after commencement of therapy sessions.

Who will enjoy Equine Therapy?

Anyone with a keen interest in animals.

Liewe Ouer

Hoe so mag jy vra?

Dear Parent,

If you are here you are surely tired of searching for soltions or have been lucky enough to find the perfect solution.

I would like to tell you a story: We have a lovely little girl. She is currently 7 years old and for the first time we feel thankful and relieved. How so you may ask? At 6 months of age Isabella was diagnosed with low muscle tone which took hours and years of physio- and occupational therapy with very little improvement. Like everybody we have spent hours on the internet to try and find a solution for our princes. In grade R she failed the first term. The question is how do you fail Grade R? We did not know what to do. The after school centre did not want to take her anymore and nothing we did seemed to work. At the age of 5 she was diagnosed with ADHD which is every parent’s nightmare! This meant that we had to go see more therapists and psychiatrists. We did not know what to do extra to try and find a solution. We then made the difficult choice to keep her back for a year rather than having her struggle in Grade 1.

We have tried various extra mural activities, all of them claiming to improve muscle tone, concentration and self-confidence. We also tried schools with smaller classes for more individual attention, Ballet, chess, play ball, action ball, but everything without success. We sold our cards, changed jobs, everything to make it easier for our princess, with nothing we would not do for her.

After hours of research and buckets full of tears we decided to stop everything and to try horseback riding and music. We searched everywhere for suitable therapists and coaches. Apart from her physical problems she also struggled with social adjustment and had panic attacks quite often. At last we found Rosalind! With hours of patience and support from her and other supportive parents at the yard we started to see a difference. In January Sonné started lessons with Isabella.

Dear parent, I have never seen anyone in my life with so much dedication for any child as Sonné, apart from maybe the parents themselves. After 6 months I can say with a proud heart that I wish that I can describe in words what horseback riding has done for my child.

Isabella doesn’t have any muscle tone problems, she is a deal daredevil with loads of self-confidence. Even the panic-attacks are very few. She is starting to make friends, her average at school is 87% with a mathematics average of 95%. To think that she had to repeat Grade R!!

The only wish I have is that I discovered horse riding therapy sooner, it would have solved our problems much earlier. My personal opinion is that it has a lot to do with the instructor.

Thank you Sonné for all your dedication and patience with our princess. Sonné reads her needs like a book, she knows what to say when and how to get the best out of your child.

I can recommend this type of therapy to any parent, before you even look any further.

Our little girl, Caitlyn, was entered into the Saturday classes. We started attending the 20 minutes classes, every Saturday morning. Her instructor, Sonne Visagie, was very friendly and also, sympathetic towards Caitlyn`s diagnoses of “Low Muscle Tone”. She explained how the classes work and informed us of the effect it will have on Caitlyn`s muscle development.

When we started with the classes, Caitlyn was about 1 year old and her muscles were still very much undeveloped and she was still struggling to sit without support. She had difficulty moving by herself. Within the next 5 to 6 lessons, we noticed the impact of the horse riding classes, as the muscles in her neck started to develop stronger. Shortly after that, she started to sit on her own, for longer periods at a time.

We noticed a miraculous change in our little girl, with friends and family also praising the positive effect that this horse riding has brought towards the development of Caitlyn` s muscles.
